Joining a youPIX Festival is a lot like jumping live into the Internet. We create a unique mix between all the fun on the web and deep discussions about how the digital world is disrupting a whole bunch of aspects in our lives. With presentation titles like “Nerds on Beer“, “F*cking Brazilians, how do they work” and more, that was the mood we tried to set for our very first international edition that happened on October 24th at the Barrel House.

HOW DID THE NIGHT GO?
Bia Granja, curator of the event, opened the night talking about Brazilian memes and virals. The idea was not to translate every Portuguese meme into English (for that, read the BRIEF GUIDE TO UNDERSTANDING BRAZILIAN EPIC MEMES), but to explain some key points and logics related to these memes that could help others understand a little about how Brazilians relate to the online world. Find her presentation below:
After that, Brazilian journalist and internet expert, Rosana Hermann fascinated everyone with the PIGGEIST concept, a term she created upon the idea of ZEITGEIST (spirit of times). According to her, that’s what really defines the brazilian behavior online: the PIG SPIRIT (“Espírito de Porco” = the nature that makes trolls troll). Brazilians love pranks and she showed some funny examples to make her point: Cala Boca Galvão, CHUPA @APLUSK, and others that can be found in her presentation:
VIDEO OPEN MIC NIGHT
After that, Jamie Wilkinson invited some web-depth plumbing experts such as Eddie Codel, Tim Hwang and Patrick Ewing for the first VIDEO OPEN MIC NIGHT! Each one of them created a playlist at VHX.TV and had 10 minutes to show it off and tell a cool/interesting/terrifying story with, through, or around the videos. IT WAS EPIC! Watch them all below:
“NEWSCASTS DISRUPTIONS ” BY EDDIE CODEL
Reporting the news can be dangerous or sometimes just embarrassing. Either way, a bit of schadenfreude is good for the soul.
“DIE ANTWOORD” BY JAMIE WILKINSON
Die Antwoord is the best South African rap-performance art group you’ve never heard of! (we truly recommend that you watch the EVIL BOY videoclip, a bit NSFW).
“GOD MEMES” BY PATRICK EWING
GOD is everywhere….
“DON’T TRY THIS AT HOME” BY TIM HWANG
The internet is good at many things. Small kids wielding ridiculously dangerous homebrew flamethrowers is one of them.
NERDS ON BEER + FACEBOOK SHOTS
And after all the amusement, it was time to get drunk network… While listening to a delicious playlist full of new Brazilian singers “mixtaped” by DJ Maestro Billy specially to the event (download it here), people were able to taste the Facebook Shots (made of cachaça and a banana/ginger syrup, grab the recipe here) created by the Brazilian mixologist Junior WM from Mundo Copo.

We hope everyone’s night was as fun as ours and we are reeeeeeeeeeeally looking forward
to a second youPIX night in San Francisco. :)
